Cardboard: The Versitile Building Material

Students created a few props for our school play.  They used leftover corrugated boxes, cereal boxes, and cardboard tubes.   After hot gluing everything together another group of students painted them.  After the play all of these works of art went home with one of their proud creators.

Kinetic Sculpture

During the summer I like to look for and try out new ideas for my classes.  One that had been on my mind was creating a kinetic sculpture that I came across on the Blick Art page.   Since some of the materials can be kind of pricey, it would have to be an after school or small group activity, possibly paid for through a grant.

I have to admit it turned out pretty cool.  After making one out of poster board and other materials I decided to try making one from scraps of wood and other modified parts.  Most of these items I was able to acquire from the local Habitat for Humanity Restore.  Check out the video below to see how both projects came out.

"The RIght Fit"

I frequently have students who ask to come to my room during their lunch period.  The cardboard creation below was made by one such student.  He had competed his art section for the year, but really wanted to create a large robot out of cardboard.

In the early stages of this project, the student called me over to look.  He was standing next to his robot who now had on shoes.  With its creator standing next to it in socks. :)

Of course I loved the look, so I made a special trip to our local Goodwill store after school to find a pair of shoes that could fit a robot.
They were customized with some paint and the robot had its own pair of shoes.
